Gai Waterhouse’s maiden Prompt Response is early favourite in Percy Sykes Stakes 2016 betting to break through with her first turf triumph this Saturday at Royal Randwick on Day 2 of ‘The Championships’.

Set to run as Randwick Race 4 at 1:20pm (AEDT), this season’s $500,000 Group 3 IG Markets Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) features a field of 12 two-year-old fillies.

Sitting top of the Percy Sykes Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.30 for the win is Waterhouse’s progressive daughter of Beneteau Prompt Response.

She ran second to Concealer in a Group 3 on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington on debut in the spring before a first-up fourth beaten only two lengths by Calliope in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 12.

Prompt Response has had the little break between runs and won a 900m Rosehill trial since then so from barrier eight with Kerrin McEvoy aboard looks a big hope of posting her maiden win on the weekend.

There are three other single figure hopes in Percy Sykes Stakes betting this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival including $5.50 second elect Thyme For Roses with the wide barrier 11 draw to overcome.

Waterhouse’s other runner in the field, the daughter of Redoute’s Choice might have the double digit gate but the bookies are taking no chances on the last start Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) winner at Flemington.

She won that Melbourne sprint running away by nearly three lengths and trialled well at Rosehill late last month ahead of her first official Sydney start on the weekend.

The other two under $10 for the win are the Kris Lees-trained Twist Tops ($6.50) who is also by Beneteau and Gretna ($7) from the star Sydney stables of Chris Waller.

One of the best tried in the field, Twist Tops has had six runs to date including her Inglis Classic win at the track and distance in early February and comes off a good third in the Magic Night Stakes.

She also blitzed a recent Beaumont trial over 800m at home by over two lengths so is fit and ready to fire on Saturday from gate five with Brenton Avdulla aboard.

Nicely-bred Snitzel filly Gretna has had three wins for a Moonee Valley win and a last start Caulfield third, but is yet to race in Sydney and hasn’t been over 1200m since her failed 11th in an Inglis-restricted race in early February.

At more generous odds looking for the upset are the likes of Thoroughbred Breeders third placegetter behind Thyme For Roses last start Soviet Secret ($12) who also ran second to Twist Tops at Randwick earlier in the autumn and Najmaat ($12) coming off a Caulfield 1100m win from March 26 – drawn well in barriers four and three respectively.
